[Computer Art] Tomato - Lighting Study

This is a study of lighting, a person once told me to try to use surrounding colors to make shading seem more natural, so for this, that's what I did! It's a simple drawing, just a tomato, but it was fun!

This is also a landmark post, this will be the first post that my new animations for my videos will be seen as an intro and ending, I hope you enjoy those as well!

Programs used:
MyPaint - Art
Hyper Cam - Screen Recorder
Windows Movie Maker - Video Editing

Digital VS Traditional - Is one "better"?

Digital VS Traditional - Is one "better"?

I've heard there is a semi silent war between digital art vs traditional art, if this is the case I'd like to play diplomat and set at ease those who don't know which is “better”.

Basics:

Let me just say out of the gate, art is art, everything takes learning unless you're a super brain with no need for practice you just look at a painting or digital drawing and can duplicate it (which there are some gifted people like that.) there is no “right type” of media, although in this day and age if you want a job in art design for lets say for example Disney they expect you to be able to do digital or at least have a little bit of knowledge in that area, whether you are good at traditional or not.

I'd like to tell what the difference is for those who are just starting or aren't quiet sure what the real difference is between “Traditional” and “Digital”:
The difference is pretty simple; digital is drawn or rendered on the computer in a program, while traditional is done purely with media that's not digital like, paints, paper, art boards pencils and the like, each is different and within the 2 dimensions there could even be sub wars on “which media is best?" within their own rights, paint and markers can fight, and 3D Blender vs 2D Synfig can duke it out;  Just keep this in mind : Art is art.

My view on Digital VS Traditional:

One of my Images Drawn in MyPaint and GIMP
Digital art in my opinion, even in all it's glorious beauty will never be able to fully duplicate the exact charm that traditional art has, I'm not saying it can't duplicate traditional art, programs like MyPaint and ArtRage go out of their way to duplicate and they do pretty well, but there is something about getting paint on your hands, marker ink on your fingers an feeling the texture of the paper that has a close feel to it, and a warmth that can't be duplicated by the “fake” paints, markers and pencils the computer generates. - Again I don't say it's not beautiful, or it's bad, I love to draw with MyPaint and GIMP but it's just not the same.

Traditional Drawing From Me

Some people might think when it comes to things like paint and pencils“that's old stuff” but without old we wouldn't have the new. Without the first artist, whoever that might have been, we would never have the newest internet sensations of artists, without Disney we wouldn't have Anime, Pixar, Dreamworks, or any other animation, without Papyrus scrolls we wouldn't have modern paper, the list goes on with this but I believe the point is made, for something to be new, you have to have something old.

Then we have the people who don't like anything new, now granted there are some new things where it's just a bad idea, no arguing it, it's bad! But what about things like Anime? There are art teachers that will practically forbid their students to draw it because “it isn't art” it's just that “new” stuff that kids watch these days...Whether you like Anime or not (I'm in the middle on this), you cannot argue that it's not a talent to be able to draw and story tell like the Japanese do; And it's not even new, it's just newer to the western world, if you told a Japanese person that Anime is new they'd “roflol” at you in total belittling humor.

Digital gives the image of perfection, Traditional can give that perfection image but also a “down to earth” feel.

Brief Digital View:

Some people see digital art or computer 3D rendering as cheating, “you just have a program do it for you”; Believe me, although even I feel to a point there is a bit of “cheating” involved, I know that it takes a lot of work to make a 3D or even a 2 drawn movie or drawing using computers.

Look at this Screen Shot of the Default user interface of Blender a free 3D rendering program.

Bigger Version Here.

This is just a free program! Imagine what the high class programs Pixar or Dreamworks uses, it's ridicules! There is no way a person can say that 3D rendering is simple or literal cheating is going on and fully believe it, you can feel it but doesn't mean it's true! ( I apply this to myself as well.)

Here's also another Screen Shot, this is of my setup in GIMP 2.8.

Bigger Version Here.

It's got a lot of features, if I was to go in to all the filters, brushes and things within GIMP I'd be doing a GIMP overview and for now that isn't my purpose; With that said, it's taken me years to learn GIMP and I'm still learning.

Traditional View

Okay, I'll be honest and you've probably felt the vibe throughout this, I love traditional art, I find it the life’s blood of all drawing, animation, and visual art in general, I just love it. So am I a bit biased? Eh, maybe, but I'll be honest!

Traditional art has so many realms it's not even funny, we have pencils, we have markers, we have pens, we have paints then we go down in to types of the formerly mentioned: Oil paints, watercolor paints, washable markers, permanent markers, fine art markers, lists galore everywhere!!

If a person can master one of these mediums it could be a life's mission, and the same counts for any other media whether it be 3D rendering or digital painting.

Traditional is for me, more impressive, for others maybe not so much but for me, if you can draw something that you wanna touch with colored pencils or markers, I'm just passing out with my mouth wide opened “WOW!”. Traditional can tend to not be “perfect” which reminds us a human made the picture.

Traditional might cost more money in the long run, but if you enjoy doing it it's totally worth it!

Combining the two:

Screen Shot From The "Be Our Guest" Scene
Okay, most of you probably saw Disney's “Beauty and the Beast”, it's one of their classic hand drawn princess movies, but what you might not know is that for the “Be Our Guest” song scene there was computer generation added to it; The part with the chandelier was CG generated, but it all looked like their lovely hand-drawn animation, it had harmony and beauty, and it probably made it much easier for the animators.

Another Screen Shot From The "Be Our Guest" Scene

Screen Shot of "Doctor Doppler"in Treasure planet
Another Disney treasure, “Treasure Planet” had hand-drawn and digital combined and it was wonderful! Some people weren't fond of the style but I think they did a good job personally. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But my point is, that in the world out there where the pros are, they combine the two and it comes out great. One isn't necessary better than the other, they're different but still the same.
Screen Shot of James Hawkins looking upon a CG Generated Space Whale.
Note: All Rights Reserved to Disney on the Artwork expressed in these images.

Just a thought: If you can't draw anything on paper what makes you think a computer is gonna help you? Sure there are tools that could make it simpler but you still have to learn to draw, whether on paper or on the computer you have to learn.

These 2 medium compliment each-other: Drawing on paper helps drawing digitally, and drawing or rendering digitally helps you to see how three-dimensional objects work in a new light and make things that you can't make on paper or canvas. There are things that can't be done with one medium that the other can do: Blender can't paint on a canvas with oil paints and a marker can't make a 3D Rendered image of Woody Pride (Toy Story) or Vanellope Von Schweetz (Wreck it Ralph) but we can learn from both, and make them be in harmony so why don't we just have fun?

Maybe you want to draw a picture but you find it hard to sketch on the computer, sketch on paper! Maybe you find inking hard with pens, scan (if you have a scanner) a sketch use tools on the computer and print it out, if you don't have a scanner use a camera if you have one!..Or maybe you can't color too well on paper, use a program to color your drawings you've inked or sketched, there are tools available to you! And to those who think they can't because they don't have a tablet, trust me on this, you don't need one, yes it's good if you have one but you don't need it, I know of artists including myself that use a mouse and things come out just fine!

In conclusion:

Just as many people make beautiful things with colored pencils, markers, and paints as people who make paintings in Photoshop, Paint tool Sai, MyPaint or other programs, there's a harmony.
I do both, I do more “realistic” stuff with the computer and do more cartoonish on paper, I have my own balance, I don't say one is necessarily better than the other because I love both. Even the professionals use both, there isn't one all powerful art medium!

And also don't forget, style is key, if you are aiming for a certain style you need to use certain tools, if you wanna recreate Shrek you need to use a 3D rendering program, if you wanna recreate the Monalisa you need paint (unless you wanna recreate digitally which is an option), all in all, find yourself, find what you love, nothing is “the thing” you need, you need what you love to use an are most comfortable with.

So with all this I say, make up and hug it's all supposed to be fun, so have fun!

Colored Pencils: Are They Really Worth My Money?

Colored Pencils: Are They Really Worth My Money?

Opening:

Many people buy colored pencils because they are deemed cheaper than markers, and paint can often seem like something the “important” people use, but I am here to tell you that colored pencils are worth the money, whether you buy the “good” quality ones or if you buy the ones from cheaper brands like Crayola ™ or RoseArt ™.

Main Thought:

Sometimes colored pencils get a bad rap, it's like people think colored pencils it's just Crayola and after all “dats kidz stuff!” Although depending on the brand this is true to a point, but colored pencils take as much skill as any other type of media, learning it and mastering it is key; Basically become a Zen Ninja and learn the way of the pigmented graphite! You may think that you cannot make good art with cheap pencils, I beg to differ! I believe that if you can't master the cheap the better/ more expensive will be wasted trying to learn the media; Granted brand and type are different in hardness, color depth and blending, but if you can get good at cheap then you will be able to expand your color variety and also texture, not to mention you can show how pro you are coloring a super cool drawing using kids pencils...!

I use many types of pencils, namely: Prismacolor Premier, Crayola, EK Memory and also many off brands, I will say that I adore some of the cheaper pencils, they are so nice!

This picture is an example of works that can be done with cheaper colored pencils:

Bigger Version Here.

Although the majority is Prismacolor colored pencils (19) in this image, there are also 15 lesser branded pencils, Namely: Crayola and EK Memory, and also 3 off-branded pencils (dollar-store pencils) and Crayola being the majority.

Another example would be this drawing:

Image Taken From An Earlier Blog Post Which Can Be Found Here.

Although it's not the best artistic feat, it's (near if not total) majority of colored pencils are Creatology colored pencils, which on my scale of pencils are on the minor end of the artistic quality “food chain”. Don't think you're cheap for getting colored pencils!

Other artists have much more time and talent dedicated to the usage of colored pencils, look on YouTube and you'll find many artists!

Mixed media:

Blog Post here.
I'm very much a “Mixed Media” - “Artist”, I love to mix up different types of media, put it together, and make something beautiful! Colored pencils have become a literal foundation for coloring my drawings on paper.

When I say foundation I mean, first thing on the paper is normally colored pencil(s), for me it adds texture, depth, as well as texture both rough and smooth, it makes my markers (which are almost exclusively kids markers) slip about on the waxy base and go on much smoother and can even be blended with my finger or tissue. They are also make a very nice paper stiffener, I am currently in a “pencil only” sketch book, so to color with markers is not ideal, but still possible!

Blog Post can be found here.
My tip to you would be to layer the colored pencils on top of each other to make a thick waxy “coat” over the pores of the paper, also I'd recommend to get a “colorless blender pencil”; This is a colorless wax type pencil that you use to blend pencil together, the softer the pencils the more the blender-pencil will do it's job, for this Prismacolor is best as it's the pencil the blender-pencil was designed to work with, but it works somewhat if you mix brands and it works oddly enough nicely on crayons.

The one I use is from Prismacolor, I'm not sure if other brands make it but it's totally possible.

The Images in this section are examples of Mixed Media Drawings.

Storage:

Ways to store:

  • Rubber Bands
  • Tupperware containers (small for colors, or a (few maybe) bigger ones to store bound colored pencils)
  • Bags (I have sewn bags with zippers my mother made me)
  • Storage Units with smaller drawers or cubby compartments.

Please, this is a personal plea, when storing your colored pencils please, I beg thee with ever fiber of my being...put them in color order...Nothing is more irritating and inconvenient (to me) than having a bunch of pencils (or markers) not in color order! Let me tell you some of the good things that come from doing this!!

  • Coloring is more efficient
  • Coloring Trains of thought will not crash as you look for a certain color
  • You will realize when you are out of a color so you're prepared before starting a picture with certain colors in mind.
  • You will feel good inside
  • I will not come to your house to do it for you....That would be awkward...!!!!

Please, put them in color order!

Other things I would like to note is, when putting them in color order, also put them in brand order.
If you use Tupperware containers to store your pencils put each color in rubber bands, blues all together, pinks, greens, etc..., we all have a certain way to think of colors so I shall not say what order to set the pencils, but have some kind of order. Trust me it helps!!
I normally separate brand and color so lets say I have Crayola in Oranges and RoseArt, I'll put the RoseArt Oranges together and the Crayola Together within brand.

I'm getting irritating now, I'm sorry!

Conclusion:

Pencils are useful! Don't diss our graphic friends, embrace them with love and hugs!

If you want to read up on various brands I wrote a review and comparison on 4 different brands in detail and lightly touch on a few other various brands and types. The post can be found here.

I hope this was useful! Now go out there and create something beautiful and epic for all the world to see!

[Traditional Art] WIP- Asi Ella Danza - Update 2:

Update 2:

The shading on her face just will not cooperate with me, I am almost finished with the dress, the colors are kinda confusing now but okay!  I also added the foundational colors for the rainbow and colored in the vines, although I think they need a little more work. I've been working a bit with a "brush on sealant" trying to get the stuff to shine a bit more. It's a little hard since every time I wet the watercolor some of it comes up, I prefer the spray sealant. So many colors....

Things Must Get Worse Before They Get Better!

We've all drawn a drawing and we don't see it coming together, but you've spent so much time on it.."Is it worth it?" You ask yourself; I say in response, "Yes, yes it is."

When I'm coloring a picture I often get discouraged in the base stages, because let me be honest, it looks terrible, I mean it's just sad. I've given up on a lot of images because of that, but I have learned to not be so critical and maybe look away for a while and come back.

Let me show you an example:

Here is the base coloring stage for the grapes to my dancer girl I'm working on:

To me this is just terrible to look it, it's horrible! But I spent too much time on this piece of art to give up now! So I kept at it:

Look at it now, it looks much better! In the light it even shines a little.
See? Maybe I did it with grapes, but it can be done with anything; Often times it just takes keeping the panic mode to a minimum, take a breather, step back, get a class of water come back and just over that “Oh no it's ruined!” phase. Work at it! Things must look or get worse before they get better, in everything not just art.

Are all cases with happy endings? No, but that doesn't mean we can't aim for it!

Now go draw a picture, sing a song, or write a story and have fun!

The Four "Can Do" Options - Tips When An Art Piece Seems To Be Going No Where.

The 4 "Can Do" Options - Tips When An Art Piece Seems To Be Going No Where.

Opening Thoughts:

We've all had issues or are in issues that are hard right? And you eventually get out. Whether you thank Divine Intervention or not, it does happen. - But life issues aside, how can we deal with it when we work hours on a drawing, painting, sculpture, or even a music piece and you feel like it's going no where? I hate that feeling, so, to attempt to cause others not have that feeling, I shall tell some ways to get out of this “slump” as it were.

Main thoughts:

There are Four things you can do.
I don't say these WILL work for you, we're all different, maybe you've tried these already and you know them, in that case call me Madam Doctor Obvious and throw tomatoes at me...But you have to find and catch me first! Ha!

The Four Things Are:
  • Take a break for a few minutes or even a few days then go back to it.
  • Refresh your mind
  • Leave out distractions
  • Give up on it

Take a break:

If you have spent a significant amount of time on a piece or art, or even a section of it and it doesn't seen to be working out for you, or it just will not cooperate, get up and walk away! I don't mean give up on it, I just mean take a break, after a while your creative juices die down and they need to be replenished. This would lead to my next point...

Refresh your mind:

People do this different ways, some like music, some like to watch a video or movie either online or TV, others like to read or get something to eat and/or drink. Find what you see works to refresh your mind, we're all different, maybe none of what I said will help you refresh your mind. - And this would take me to...

Leave out distractions:

Granted I just said walk away and do something else for a while but lets face it, some of us have the attention spans of spinach in a can and end up forgetting or giving up on something because we were distracted too long, or am I the only one in this!?

When you are..Okay Lets not put my attributes on you! When I'M distracted I tend to loose all motivation for hours, and sometimes days and even eventually giving up out of no motivation.

DON'T DO THAT! THAT'S BAD!

If things distract you like what was mentioned above to relax you, like music, videos, or something else, avoid it! Sometimes I even get away from the internet just so I'm not distracted!
If you have an MP3 Player and you NEED music to draw, use that instead. - Internet can tempt you, it's got daemon blood I tell you!! One little thought like - ”...Email...maybe I should check it...No! I'm coloring something...But what if I got a message...No, I'm busy, no internet for me!..GAH ALRIGHT! I'mma look at my email.” -  then you have nothing in your inbox, so you decide look on your site of choice see if anything is new, then you go to another place and before you know it, your drawing is calling a psychiatrist thinking it's got a problem when it's you who can't ignore email for a few hours! Don't ignore the drawing in the name of email! Your mail-box will be there 2 hours from now.

Give up on it...for now!

Maybe in the end, giving up is the right thing, maybe you messed up in a truly unrepairable way, I don't mean the eye color is blue and you wanted green, or maybe you put an odd shadow and you are distraught for the moment, for that walk away, depending on the media those can be fixed pretty easy normally, I mean like, the paint dripped down and you have a dripping mess, that I'd put away and take it as a loss, accidents happen, and everything can't be finished all the time! But I don't think you should throw those away, as painful as they are to look at, they are good reminders on what not to do, and also maybe in days, months or years to come then pass again you might learn how to fix the mistakes and you can have a new masterpiece!

Final Thoughts:

Unless your job is to do some kind of art and you HAVE to do it, if you're not enjoying yourself, just get away from it for a while, after all, you're spending effort and time you will never get back so do what you enjoy! - If none of these ways work for you, feel free to ignore me and throw the tomatoes when you find me. If one of these work for you, well I'm happy to have been of service!

Now get out there and do what you love!..Just don't get hurt doing it!

WIP - Asi Ella Danza - [Traditional Art]

This is my first drawing of a girl/lady/woman from a behind type pose, needless to say this took me hours! I used Christopher Hart's "Figure it out" book for some help, and also "How to draw manga" by Katy Coope for drawing her face although the reference for the more real looking face was from C.Hart's book. None of the positions I looked at looked like this almost at all, only minor similarities. The pose is from my head! - There was nothing for how her feet should look so I had to mentally look at how the body moves and figure it out, if I tried to physically try this post I'd be broken in pieces on the floor and you'd have to sweep me up. Haha!  The board I used to draw on I've had for years, a person gave me old art stuff from when she was in collage that she had still.

I still have to add details on her dress and fix up her hair until I like it better. But yeah anyways I shall shut up and get to the picture.

Title is:  Asi Ella Danza - So she dances. I took it from Josh Groban's song title and tried to make it Spanish......Emphasis on "tried". ...Anyways shutting up now! Enjoy!
