Drawing Practices Over The Weekend

I recently got a sketch-book so I don't have to use up my mixed media paper which costs a lot of money I don't have...to draw stuff that isn't all that good....anyways...yeah...Lol.

I followed Mark Crilley tutorials, 2 lessons in "Figure it out" by Christopher Hart, and some lessons on DragoArt.com (go there with caution, some tutorials are kinda...just kinda.)

Anyways, here ya go!

Enjoy!

I hope this was helpful!

Sketching and Inking Process - Scarecrow Wreath

This is a sketch/inking process for a drawing I'm working on. I'm yet to color it but at least you can see the process.

     Enjoy!

Sketch:

First, I block everything in. The wreath outline and the base for the body, including the head. I also put basic facial guidelines.

Now I add details likes hair and clothes on the scarecrow, and guidelines to other things like the cone flowers in the background and a soon to be sunflower along with a leaf (which I later get rid of).

After a while, I've added more details, fleshed out the face and drawn other things like the acorn and pine cone branch where the leaf was. And put leaves on the other side.

After I drew out everything, I lightened some lines and went over the whole drawing with a mechanical pencil. In so doing I also added a tree/wood pattern to the wreath.

Inking:

First, I used a fine-point sharpie that was older so the ink flow was thinner than if it was new.
I started on the clothes and hair, along with the hay-based hands.

Next, I inked more hair and added the bows, along with the face using a new fine-point sharpie which makes a bigger ink-flow. I inked the outer edge of the wreath with a 1.0 Sakura Micron pen.

I also inked the outside of the edge of the pine-cones with the sharpie then I inked the inside using a 005 Sakura Pigma pen.

After I inked the cone flowers with the new sharpie but the inner-part was inked with the 005 point pen. I also inked the sunflower but I forgot to take a picture.  After all that was done I added the wood with the 005 point pen.

In the end, I added some thicker lines and I erased.

Some Updates for Tilly's Rose Garden; Season: Spring

I've done quite a lot of updates recently on "Tilly's Rose Garden; Season: Spring".

1: The Aspect Ratio has been 800X600 for every version of the game thus-far, but in spring (and I think from now on) it will be 800X660. The reason for this...?

2: ...I've added some buttons within the game arena.

  1. Save - Saves game
  2. Load - Loads game
  3. Index- Will have a small index of the basic "needs to know" to refresh memory during gameplay.
  4. Menu - Takes you to the main menu

3: Graphics update.
Every version of the game has had roses or rose-bushes in the corners of the arena, for spring I have a more Dalia/Daisy like flower taking up the corners, it's a nice change of pace and it makes things a little more interesting.

4: I've changed the menu ones again, (I had to remake all menus to fit the new aspect ratio) and it has another new button "Load Game", as it suggests if you saved your game you can load from where you saved. Keep in mind you only get on saved game and the next time you save the old will be over-written.

A few more which will be shown in a video:

So there are some of my updates!

Enjoy!

Tip of the Week: Add Fluidity

Adding Fluidity
Stiff -vs- "Fluid (Curved)

A drawing needs fluidity, balance, and some freedom. Even in hyper realism there is much fluidity.
If you are drawing a face or a body, you have contours of the muscles and fat of a body...

...Or if you draw an animal, the fur doesn't simply stick out, it flows and follows the shape of the animal.
Animal Fur (cat ear)

Plants don't grow stiffly up in most cases, they have weight, bends and flows, they move and twist in the wind and though it might sound weird they actually do breath...I suppose what I'm trying to say it that living things aren't stiff, they move, they bend, and the show presence, if you want a good drawing you need to present that in some way.
See how the vine flows?

Same thing with textures like fabric, even sitting there it has depth when something moves past it it flows, when the wind touches it there is a light-weight feeling to it. Take this drawing for example:

One thing to avoid, though, when trying to make things interesting is to not make things seem “plastic”, if you have something at on angle, having a smaller similar object going at the same direction can make it unbalanced like you are trying too hard.

I hope this was helpful!

{Digital Art} African Girl By a Brick Wall

Okay so, I finally got mad that I can't use MyPaint (won't open even if I re-install and all that fun stuff) and downloaded an older version...and it works! So to test out this old version I colored a year old sketch of an African girl using MyPaint (v 0.9.5?) and GIMP 2.8.

In the sketch it was fast drawn  (a doodle really but I liked it) but in coloring I tried to keep the fluidity of the pose and the weight of her hat falling to one side. I think it came out pretty good...!  The brick wall I thought fit with African/Middle Eastern villages building structures and it seems to add texture.

So yeah, without any further ado, enjoy!

[Traditional Art ] Mushrooms and a Butterfly

I saw this video a while ago where a woman was using baby oil to blend colored pencils....so I tried it out. This took me about 6 or 7 hours, I'm not used to working so much in just one media for a single drawing so this was very hard for me. There is a small amount of white paint (the whitedots) and some highlights on the rock and other mushroom but you can't really see it on the mushroom I used different brands and they all seemed to blend with baby oil so I think that's a good sign.

Enjoy!

Colored Pencils:

Bigger Version

  • 1 - Art Stick (Prismacolor)
  • 6 - Crayola

{Game Release} Tilly's Rose Garden; Seasons: Winter

It's finally here! The first of four mini games, having features like weather and pick a level menu along with ice like tension when moving the character....I Present to you.....

Download

Works in MS Windows, I don't know about linux.

Programs Used:
  • GameMaker 8.0 - Game Creation and Construction, Minor Graphic Editing
  • Goldwave - Free Version - Converting MP3's to .Wav, volume adjustment, and clipping down songs for animations.
  • GIMP - Graphics
  • Sony Acid - Free version - Sound Creation
  • Mp3 Quality Modifier - Music Compression

Creator's Notes:

Features:
  •  Breakable-blocks and hammers.
  •  Sliding effect as if you are on ice.
  •   New sounds
  •  Snowing Effect
  •  Pick a Level Menu
  •  Mitten Cursor

Irritations:
  • The cursor doesn't do away after you start the game (I haven't found a way to fix this)
  • When you have other applications opened with the game you will hear yourself going over the buttons if you are in a menu.
  • If there is a 1 square opening you need to move around diagonally to get in. (This is because of the sliding effect)

{Game Release} Tilly's Rose Garden "Extended Demo"

Yes, Finally, you can see it! I figured the original demo is just a smaller version of this one so I'll just go right to the extended to post here.

Introducing the brand new extended edition of the "Tilly's Rose Garden Demo", with 5 new levels, bumped up graphics and once again featuring the music of "Summertime's End" I present to you:

DOWNLOAD

Note:
Due to my host being a private domain (borrowed space) you might get a notice saying this is a virus. This is because the server isn't a "known" source to downloads therefore considered unsafe. It is perfectly safe! No viruses or anything like that!

Programs Used:

  • GameMaker 8.0 - Game Creation and Construction, Minor Graphic Editing
  • GIMP - Graphics
  • Sony Acid - Free version - Sound Creation
  • Goldwave - Free Version - Converting MP3's to .Wav, volume adjustment, and clipping down songs for animations.
  • Mp3 Quality Modifier - Music Compression
  • Windows Movie Maker - Animation compilation.

Creator's Notes:

Updates:

  1. New Splash Screen
  2. 5 New Levels
  3. Each Level Has A Name (Ex: Level 2 is called "Yellow Path"); You can see the name if you play in windowed mode, it's written where the score once was.
  4. Updated Main Menu
  5. Updated Ending Animation
  6. New Cursor (Tilly's Wing)
  7. The Score Caption has been removed on the window (Not the scoreboard in the game itself)
  8. Graphic Boost (Specifically the rose points [without stems])
  9. New "Next Level" image (The circle you hit to go to next level)

Irritations:

  • Not really a bug but the shadow to the player-sprite sometimes touches the enemies and pointdrainers, watch out for that.
  • The Playable character still gets stuck sometimes on the smaller spaces, this is I'm convinced now part of the grid and can't be fixed (?).
  • Speed makes is pretty much impossible to get in those tight spaces that are only one block wide, use bigger areas for speed if at all possible even if it's 2 blocks wide instead of 1.
  • When saving your game don't delete the .sav file or else you will loose your saved game.
  • The Cursor still doesn't disappear when the game starts, I'm not sure how to "fix" this, I think I'm just too noob to know how to make it go away....*cough*..Moving on..
